“When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”— Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

Work with gravity

Let gravity lift and support you instead of pulling you down into old compensations.

Corrective exercise

Leave with posture and movement patterns you can use at your desk, on the trail, or in the water.

Reduce tension & pain

Myofascial release eases chronic holding in the fascia that drives back, neck, shoulder and hip pain.

27+ years’ experience

Practicing in San Diego since 1999, including five years teaching Structural Integration.

The method

Myofascial release & Structural Integration

Myofascial release is hands-on work that frees restricted fascia, the connective tissue that wraps and links every muscle. Structural Integration, also called the Rolf Method, takes myofascial release further: it organizes that work around the whole body’s alignment and pairs it with corrective exercise and posture & movement education. It was developed by biochemist Dr. Ida P. Rolf, who saw the body as one continuous web of tissue rather than a set of separate parts.

Unlike a massage, you are an active participant. With breath, small guided movements and attention, we look for more natural alignment in the joints, softer and more responsive connective tissue, a sense of grounding, and balance through the whole body. That awareness is what makes changes last: movement becomes easier and more efficient, and everyday stress, tension and discomfort ease.

Searching for Rolfing® in San Diego?

Rolfing® is the trademarked name for Structural Integration as taught by the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute. The work offered here comes from the same source, Dr. Rolf’s Ten Series, taught under the name Structural Integration. Same lineage, same principles, same goal: a body that’s organized around its line of gravity.

The classic protocol

The Ten Series

Ten sessions that reorganize the body from the ground up and from the surface inward — Dr. Rolf’s original whole-body approach.

1–3

The sleeve

Opening the superficial fascial layers frees the breath and prepares the tissue, and you, for deeper work.

4–7

The core

Deeper layers and long-held patterns, with aligned movement during the session so balance is learned, not just felt.

8–10

Integration

Bringing it together: moving from the deep intrinsic muscles so the larger muscles stop doing all the work.

Have one specific problem? A shorter, focused series often comes first.

Who it helps

Common reasons San Diegans book

Chronic back pain

Low-back tension that massage and stretching haven’t resolved, often linked to how the pelvis and ribs are organized.

Neck & shoulder pain

Long-standing shoulder restrictions, forward-head posture and neck pain from old injuries or accidents.

Desk & screen work

Sore wrists, rounded shoulders and a tight chest from long hours at a computer.

Surfers, runners & climbers

Recover range of motion, move more efficiently and reduce the repetitive strain of your sport.

Knee & hip problems

Alignment from the feet up, including clients feeling out of balance after hip replacement.

Posture & body awareness

Performers, bodyworkers and anyone who wants to stand taller and move with more ease.

FAQ

Myofascial release & Structural Integration questions

Is Structural Integration the same as Rolfing®?

They share the same roots. Structural Integration is the method Dr. Ida Rolf developed beginning in the 1950s. “Rolfing®” and “Rolfer®” are registered service marks used by graduates of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute; other schools teach the same Ten Series approach as Structural Integration or the Rolf Method. If you searched for a Rolfer in San Diego, this is the same lineage of work: deep fascial bodywork combined with posture and movement education. Archie trained in Structural Integration at the International Professional School of Bodywork in San Diego and has practiced since 1999.

What is myofascial release, and how is it different from Structural Integration?

Myofascial release is hands-on work that frees restricted fascia, the connective tissue around every muscle. Structural Integration uses myofascial release as its main tool, but organizes it around the whole body’s alignment and adds corrective exercise and movement education. You can book focused myofascial release for a specific problem or the full Structural Integration Ten Series.

What happens in a Structural Integration session?

Sessions combine slow, deep work on the connective tissue (fascia) with breath and active movement. Unlike a massage, you take part: you’ll be asked to breathe into areas, make small movements, and notice how you stand and walk. The goal is more natural alignment in the joints, softer connective tissue, and easier, more efficient movement.

Do I have to commit to the full Ten Series?

No. The classic Ten Series works through the whole body over ten sessions and is the most thorough option. Many clients start with a shorter, problem-focused series for a specific issue such as neck, shoulder, low-back or hip pain, then decide about the full series once that nagging issue has settled.

How much does a session cost?

A 80 minutes session is $180, cash or check. Cash or check. $6 surcharge for debit/credit. Sessions are booked every 80 minutes; expect to be out the door in about 70.

Does Structural Integration hurt?

The work is deep, but it should never be more than you can breathe through. Pressure is adjusted continually and you are always in control of the pace. Clients often describe it as intense but relieving, and some feel a little sore the next day, much like after a good workout.

How long do the results last?

Because the work changes how you hold and use your body, results tend to last. Most people continue to integrate changes for months after a series. Maintenance sessions every one to three months are helpful for some clients but not always necessary.

Where is your San Diego office?

The office is at 4452 Park Blvd, Ste 102, San Diego, CA 92116 in University Heights, a few minutes from North Park, Hillcrest, Normal Heights and Mission Hills. Sessions are by appointment only.
